Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle manufacturer, has initiated a significant recall impacting a variety of its models due to a unique issue related to font size on the instrument panel. The recall affects approximately 2.2 million vehicles, including Tesla Model S (2012-2023), Model X (2016-2024), Model 3 (2017-2023), Model Y (2019-2024), and the 2024 Cybertruck. The core issue pertains to the font size of the warning indicators for the brake, anti-lock brake, and park functions on the instrument panel, which is smaller than the legally required size of 3.2 mm, or roughly 1/8 inch.
This problem was first identified during a compliance audit of a 2023 Tesla Model Y. The smaller font size for these critical warning indicators raises concerns about the visibility of essential safety information, potentially increasing the risk of accidents. Despite the absence of reports linking this issue to any crashes, injuries, or deaths, Tesla has opted to proceed with the recall as a precautionary measure.
To rectify the issue, Tesla is rolling out a free software update over-the-air, which will adjust the font size on the instrument panels of the affected vehicles. The company has scheduled to send out notification letters to Tesla owners by March 30, 2024. Tesla owners can reach out to Tesla’s customer service for further information.
In addition to this recall, Tesla has also been addressing complaints about the power steering function in some 2023 Model Y and Model 3 vehicles, where drivers have experienced difficulties in steering. These reports have prompted an investigation by the Office of Defects Investigation, focusing on incidents where steering control was lost, leading to towing or traffic disruptions.
There’s also a notable update regarding Elon Musk’s compensation package from Tesla. A Delaware judge recently canceled Musk’s $55.8 billion compensation package, which was considered one of the largest in US corporate history. The judge ruled the package unnecessary and potentially unfair, countering Tesla’s argument that it was essential for Musk’s continued dedication to the company.
